Why pigeons move in under solar panels

The gap between your panels and the roof is dry, sheltered and out of reach of predators. Once a pair find it they nest there year after year, and more follow.

  • Noise from first light. Scratching, cooing and flapping right above the bedroom.
  • Droppings everywhere. On the roof, in the gutters, down the windows and across the patio.
  • Blocked gutters. Nesting material washes down and stops the gutters and downpipes draining.
  • Damage and lost power. Birds peck at cabling, and droppings on the glass cut what your panels make.

How it works

Usually a half-day job for an average house, done from ladders or roof access. Scaffolding isn't needed in most cases.

1

Send photos for a quote

Fill in the form with your postcode and a photo of the panels. In most cases you'll get a price without anyone needing to visit first.

2

Check, clear and clean

The panels are checked for active nests before anything starts. Then the old nests, droppings and debris come out from under the panels and the gutters below.

3

Fit the mesh guard

Tough, weather-resistant mesh is clipped to the panel frames all the way round, closing the gap for good. It's dark and low-profile, so it's hard to spot from the ground.

More than just the mesh

Nest and debris removal

Years of nesting can leave a thick layer of twigs, feathers and droppings under the panels. It all comes out before the mesh goes on. If there's a nest with eggs or chicks, the work waits until it's empty. That's the law in Scotland, and it's the right thing to do.

A roof check while we're up there

Because the roof is being accessed anyway, you'll be told about anything obvious, like slipped tiles or loose flashing. Roofing work is quoted separately and only done if you want it. Nobody touches the electrics on your solar system.

What does solar panel bird proofing cost?

£400 to £1,000

That's the rough range for most homes. It depends on how many panels you have, how they're laid out and how easy the roof is to reach. A small array on an easy roof sits at the lower end. You'll get a fixed price before anything is booked.

Questions people ask

Will the mesh damage my panels or affect the warranty?

The mesh is held on with clips that grip the edge of the panel frame. Nothing is drilled into the panels, the frames or the roof.

Is it legal to remove pigeon nests?

All wild birds, feral pigeons included, are protected while nesting. In Scotland it's an offence to disturb an active nest, so panels are checked first and work waits until any nest is empty.

How long does it take?

Most houses take half a day. Bigger arrays, or panels on more than one roof, take longer. You'll be told on the quote.

Will I be able to see the mesh?

It sits tight under the edge of the panels and it's dark, so from the ground it's barely noticeable.

When's the best time to get it done?

Any time the panels are free of active nests. Pigeons nest most of the year, but plenty of people book in autumn and winter so it's sorted before spring.

Can you clean the panels too?

Yes, on its own or on the same visit as the bird proofing. See solar panel cleaning.
